Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) originally envisaged the rehabilitation and improvement of about 223 dams within four states - namely, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu - with provision for taking up some more dams in other states; the actual numbers may vary owing to the addition / deletion of dams during implementation (click current status).

The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), an undertaking of the Government of India, has shown interest for participation in DRIP utilizing unallocated component. The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was established on 7th July 1948 (under the Damodar Valley Corporation Act) with the objectives of flood control; irrigation and water supply for industrial and domestic use; generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy; Promotion of afforestation and control of soil erosion in the Damodar valley and promotion of industrial, economic and general well-being of the people in the Damodar Valley.

The Corporation has so far constructed four multipurpose dams at Tilaiya, Konar, Maithon and Panchet and an irrigation system comprising a barrage on river Damodar at Durgapur and a canal system of 2459 km. As part of DRIP activity, DVC has proposed rehabilitation of Konar, Maithon and Panchet Dams. The revised cost of Rs. 143 Cr. for restoration of these dams along with activities of Institutional Strengthening and Project Management component.
